Tulum airport (TQO) is half an hour by road from town. Cancún is about two hours away along federal highway 307. That transfer is done by taxi, private transport or car; the golf cart is not part of it, because it does not travel on the federal highway. It comes to your hotel once you are settled in.
First: which airport you land at
Tulum International opened in 2023 and changed the trip completely. Before that you had to count two hours from Cancún; now the destination is half an hour from the door.
There are still reasons to fly into Cancún — more frequencies and often cheaper fares — but put those extra two hours each way into the sum, four in total, along with what it costs to cover them.
From TQO: the four ways
Airport taxi
The most direct. The fare is agreed before you get in, as everywhere here, and it is higher at night. For four people with luggage it is usually the sensible option if you booked nothing in advance.
Pre-booked private transfer
Arranged before you fly, with someone waiting with your name. It costs much the same as a taxi and removes the only real friction of arriving: negotiating a price at midnight with three suitcases and tired children.
Rental car
It makes sense if you will be covering the Riviera Maya during the trip. If not, it is a car you will leave standing — and paying for parking — most days. The full comparison is in golf cart or rental car.
Colectivo
The vans that run along the 307. Cheap and useful between towns, but they drop you on the road, not at your hotel door. With luggage and heat, it is not the best first impression of a holiday.
From Cancún
Along federal highway 307, straight and in good shape. It is the drive almost everyone who lands in Cancún makes, and there are three ways: a pre-booked private transfer, a colectivo from the terminal, or a rental car picked up at the airport. Count about two hours door to door, and add margin if you land at rush hour.
And once you are at the hotel
This is where the cart comes in. It is delivered to your hotel, villa or Airbnb, and it is arranged when you book because it depends on the distance and the area. Collection at the end works the same way.
The order that works: transfer from the airport by road → drop the bags → take delivery of the cart at the hotel. Having the cart meet you at the airport is not a logistics question: the federal highway is not for it.
If you land at night, ask for delivery the next morning. Almost nobody goes out again after unpacking on day one, and that way you do not pay for a day you will not use.
Three mistakes that cost money
- Renting a car just for the transfer. It costs more than a private transfer and drags the parking problem through the whole trip.
- Ignoring your arrival time. Landing at midnight and sorting transport on the spot is the worst possible mix of tiredness and night fares.
- Counting on the cart from minute one. The cart is for getting around Tulum, not for getting to Tulum.
